Thanksgiving weekend at the lake

Thanksgiving is the one weekend the whole family can get away, and a cottage beats squeezing everyone into someone's dining room. Here you get five bedrooms so nobody sleeps on a couch, 3.5 bathrooms, and a chef's kitchen with Frigidaire Professional appliances, a double fridge-freezer and cookware for 12, which is what a turkey for a crowd actually needs. Eat at the long table under cathedral ceilings with the lake behind you, then take the leftovers to the fire pit. Children and dogs are welcome.

Fall colours from the dock

Peak colour around Gravenhurst usually runs from the last week of September to mid-October. From the cottage you can see it three ways: from the private dock at sunrise with a coffee, from a kayak or paddleboard on a lake that is glass-calm in October, and from the hiking trails that start a five-minute walk from the door. Hardy Lake Provincial Park and the Torrance Barrens Dark-Sky Preserve are nearby for a day hike and, on a clear night, the Milky Way.

Winter and the holidays

The cottage is fully climate-controlled and built for winter, so December through March is cosy rather than rustic: snow on the dock outside, a warm cathedral-ceiling living room inside, high-speed Wi-Fi if someone has to work. Hidden Valley ski hill is a short drive north, there is snowshoeing on the trails, and Gravenhurst has skating and a winter market. Christmas and New Year's are popular, so book early; January and February weekends are the quietest and best-value nights of the year.

What it costs in the shoulder season

Fall and winter nightly rates are well below summer, typically starting in the mid-$300s CAD midweek and the $500s on weekends, with holiday weekends higher. The base rate covers 8 adults; adults 9 to 12 are $100 per person per night, children 2 to 12 are $100 per night, and cleaning is $400 per stay.
